What's That Smell?

On Friday night February 3, 2006, the Bergenfield PD was dispatched to Pleasant Avenue to investigate a strange odor. Two blocks away on Porter Avenue, members of Prospect Fire Co. No. 1 were drilling at a house donated by a resident. Chief Hartung notified dispatch that the smell could be coming from FD units who were using a smoke machine. Dispatch notified the Chief that the resident thought the smell could be gas. Chief Hartung responded from Porter Avenue and requested the units from Porter Avenue to respond. Engine 745 responded first and began walking the block investigating a strong odor of gas. Units found that one block over, on Hillside Avenue, a resident had spilled gas in his driveway. Units were off the scene in 30 minutes.

House On Porter Avenue Donated To BFD

The residents of 66 Porter Avenue donated their house to the Bergenfield FD to drill on for a few days before it was to be razed. On Friday night, Prospect Fire Co. No.1 drilled at the home. Members filled the house with smoke using a smoke machine and reviewed ventilation scenarios. At the same time, members of the Junior Fire Department went over scene lighting with FF Jim McGoldrick. Jim is the currently heading up the Junior Firefighter Program.

Members Continue To Drill On Porter Avenue

Members of all three fire companies have now had the opportunity to drill at a house on Porter Avenue that was donated to the FD by the homeowner. The large old home is slated to be torn down and two new homes will be built in its place. On Tuesday evening, members of Alert used the house and on Wednesday, Fire Company No. 2 was there. Companies used the structure to review ventilation, fire attack, search and overhaul methods. The BFD is grateful to any resident who donates their home prior to it being razed.

Two Mortar Rounds Found In Bergenfield

At approximately 1615 hrs, as per Chief Hartung, a general alarm was sounded for all fire department personnel to respond to their respective firehouses to stand-by and wait for further instructions. It turns out that someone found two mortar rounds on Woodbine Street near the culvert that crosses the brook. The Bergen County Bomb Squad responded to the scene and was able to remove the devices without incident. All Bergenfield FD units were released by 1730 hrs and the local and county PD are investigating where these mortar rounds came from.
