Working Fire On Easter Sunday

Posted on April 12, 2009
At 1320 hrs, the Bergenfield Fire Department was dispatched on a general alarm assignment for a reported garage fire located at 73 River Edge Road. Deputy 1 (DC Edward Kneisler II) arrived first on scene and confirmed a working fire in a garage attached to a 1-1/2 story wood frame.

Just as Engine 745 under the command of Captain Lodato with a crew of 5 and Ladder 742 under the command of Lt. Saito with a crew of 3 arrived, a propane tank inside the garage exploded as handlines were being stretched. No firefighters were injured in the explosion and the fire did not extend into the house.

The resident was deep frying a turkey in his garage for Easter Dinner when the garage became engulfed in fire.  The homeowner received burns to his hands and face and was transported to an area hospital by the B.V.AC.  and fortunately no other injuries were reported.

New Milford was called in as the R.I.C. and Hackensack Engine 4 to the scene due to a dispatching error by Mid-Bergen.  Dumont and Teaneck engines along with an Englewood truck covered the empty Bergenfield firehouses. The fire was placed under control at approx 1345 hrs by Chief Byrnes.

Fire Chief Robert E. Byrnes, Jr. was in command of the fire and wanted to extend his thanks to his members, mutual companies, Bergenfield PD and B.V.A.C. for their assistance. All units were cleared from the scene by 1520 hrs.
