High Levels Of CO

Prospect Fire Co. responded on a still alarm for an activated CO alarm at 42 Whitman Street.  Deputy Chief Byrnes was first on scene and had high levels on his meter.  Once the engine company made their way into the structure they had readings on nearly 300 PPM.  The heating unit was shut down and PSEG was contacted.  The house was vented and PSEG found problems with the heating unit.  All units were cleared from the scene in 90 minutes.

2009 Officers Elected

The members of the Bergenfield fire department held their Department meeting on Wednesday, December 10th and elected their chief and desk officers for 2009.

Robert E. Byrnes, Jr. of Prospect Fire Company No. 1 will serve as chief of the Department; this will be his first time holding this position. Bob has spent the last two years as a deputy chief. Edward Kneisler, II from Alert Fire Company will serve as deputy 1. Norman Hoyt, Sr. from Bergenfield Fire Company No. 2 will serve as deputy 2.

In 2009, Christopher Naylis will serve as president of the Department along with Jerry Naylis as vice-president. Nancy Naylis will return as secretary and Rich O’Connor will be the new treasurer.

The 2009 line officers will remain relatively the same as in 2008. Jim Lodato of Prospect, Mike Lopez of Alert and Jason Lanzilotti of Fire Co. 2 will all return as Captains.  Andrew McGoldrick is the new Lieutenant from Prospect, while Chris Saito of Alert and Norman Hoyt, Jr. of Fire Co. 2 return as Lieutenants.

Ladder On Mutual Aid Run To Bogota

At 2240 Mid-Bergen Mutual Aid requested a ladder truck to respond to Bogota for a working house fire.  Truck 742 under the command of Captain Lopez and a split crew of Alert and Prospect members along with Deputy Chief Kneisler (DC2) responded on the run.  Upon their arrival at 476 River Road, command requested the crew come to the front of the structure with hooks and hand tools.  Captain M. Lopez and Firefighter E. Kneisler III were sent to the basement to secure the utilities, and then relieve Teaneck's crew.  Firefighters Olivio, N. Naylis, S. Naylis, and D. Tedesco were sent to the second floor to relieve Ridgefield Park Truck 2.  Both crews eventually met on the second floor alpha-bravo room opening up the walls and ceiling checking for hot spots.  Upon completing their task they were relieved by an additional Bogota crew.  The Truck and the Deputy were back in quarters by 0015.

Ladder On Mutual Aid Run To Tenafly

At 1742hrs a mutual aid request was made for a ladder truck to respond to Tenafly Fire Headquarters while Tenafly battled a house fire.  Deputy Chief Kneisler and Truck 742 under the command of Captain Lopez responded with a crew of four.  The Truck, the Deputy, and Dumont Squad 1 took in a fire alarm on County Road less than fifteen minutes after arriving at the firehouse.  Bergenfield members located an activated head on the second floor caused by candles.  No other runs were received and Bergenfield units were back in service by 2000 hrs.

Engine On Mutual Aid Run To Teaneck

Engine 745 and Deputy Chief Kniesler responded to the Township of Teaneck on a mutual aid cover-up assignment while Teaneck operated at a fire on Queen Anne Road.  The engine took in no runs while in Teaneck and was back in just over an hour.

Report Of Smoke In A House

At approximately 2015 hrs, the Bergenfield FD was dispatched on a general alarm to 36 Sergeant Court for a report of smoke in the house. Chief Gomez was first on scene and Deputy Chief Byrnes was the first to enter the structure and reported a smoke condition present.  Engine 745 was first due and secured a water source and stretched a dry line into the house.  The engine crew found a fire in contained to the oven.  As additional units arrived the utilities were secured and the home was vented of the smoke.  The fire department was clear of the scene in less than 60 minutes.


2008 Comes To An End

The Bergenfield FD responded to 683 calls during 2008.  We went to 121 general alarms and 562 still or single company alarms.  Of the general alarms, 5 were working fires and all were considered minor in nature. The BFD responded on 24 mutual aid assignments within our mutual groups and a few special calls as well.

Our members continue to train racking up thousands of hours of practical and classroom time both in house and while attending various classes and seminars around the country.
